Learning All The Time
by John Holt
This delightful book by the influential author of How Children Fail and How Children Learn shows how children learn to read, write, and count in their everyday life at home and how adults can respect and encourage this wonderful process.
The object of teaching a child is to enable the child to get along without the teacher. We need to educate our children for their future, not our past.

Heathen Homeschoolers (heathenhomeschoolers) - For Northern Virginia homeschoolers who identify with the heathen label. We are pagans, atheists, agnostics, Unitarian Universalists, secularists, and humanists, as well as those recovering from and or/questioning our faiths -- some of us defy labels altogether. Frequently off-topic, off-color and very chatty. This is NOT an inclusive list nor one for people who want just a 'secular experience.' This is for those of us who very much feel 'other.' Members required to have a sense of humor.

This group exists to provide support for homeschoolers who sometimes find it challenging, difficult or frustrating to be non-religious or religiously "different" within a broader homeschooling community sometimes viewed by insiders and outsiders alike as religiously homogeneous. We aim to be a supportive atmosphere, though by no means do we always agree on everything. Members are requested to participate and not "lurk."

When requesting membership, you MUST include a sentence or two explaining your homeschooling status and why you consider yourself a heathen. Only homeschoolers and heathens are accepted. Regretfully, your application will be denied if you do not comply with this requirement. The membership of this group feels strongly that we do not want to be spied upon, spammed, or proselytized at --yes, I'm sure you wouldn't, but it has happened too many times for us to Accept members without some sort of screening.

    To Subscribe, visit Heathen Homeschoolers.

Heathen Homeschoolers of Loudoun (HHLoudoun) - We are a spin off group from Heathen Homeschoolers but rather than just an online support group we are localized in Loudoun and intended for those interested in regularly participating in park days, fields trips, etc. We are pagans, atheists, agnostics, Unitarian Universalists, liberal Christians, secularists, and humanists, as well as those recovering from and or/questioning our faiths -- some of us defy labels altogether. Frequently off-topic, off-color and very chatty. Members required to have a sense of humor.

All joking aside, this group exists to provide support for homeschoolers who sometimes find it challenging, difficult or frustrating to be non-religious or religiously "different" within a broader homeschooling community sometimes viewed by insiders and outsiders alike as religiously homogeneous. We aim to be a supportive atmosphere, though by no means do we always agree on everything. Members are requested to participate and not "lurk." Upon requesting membership, you MUST provide your homeschooling status, why you're a heathen, and your general location in Loudoun (Ashburn, Leesburg, etc.). Only homeschoolers and heathens are accepted.

To Subscribe, visit Heathen Homeschoolers of Loudoun.

Holistic Northern Virginia Homeschool (holistic-nova-homeschool) - an inclusive group to facilitate community for home educators who prefer a holistic style in their home and seek to share information & engage in group activities with others who are similarly minded. This is a place for announcing and encouraging real life community whether through festival, park days, nature hikes, field trips, etc. It is for sharing resources you have found useful in the area. It is also a place for parents to list adult education opportunities such as conferences & talks. It is my hope that this list will help those who would like to build community to do so with people who share their style.

Martha's Kitchen - Northern Virginia Catholic moms (MarthasKitchen) - Named after the Patron Saint of Housewives, Martha's Kitchen is a place for Catholic moms in Northern Virginia to share housekeeping and homeschooling stories, ideas and advice. We are practicing Catholics, in union with the Magisterium, trying to become better wives and mothers, and get ourselves and our families to heaven! This list is meant to be a tool to better facilitate communication and support among women who have chosen to stay home with their children. We do not discuss serious matters of faith and morals here-there are other forums for that. We do not discuss controversial issues, nor engage in arguments and general "mud slinging." Private debates will have to be settled privately. And above all, we do not dissent from the teachings of Holy Mother Church! This list is just a "picket fence" for sharing recipes, organizational tips, homeschooling resources, books, and which store has tuna on sale for .40 a can! Feel free to use the calendar to let us know when you're throwing a party, or when Life is Beautiful comes out on video! Solicit ideas for a certain activity you are trying to coordinate, or ask for sewing advice. How do you get your children to clean their rooms, and what do you cook your picky eater for dinner? So join us in our "women's work," and when you read the story of Martha and Mary, remember, someone had to clean all those dishes!

To Subscribe, visit Martha's Kitchen - Northern Virginia Catholic moms.

Maryland/DC/Virginia Educators (MD_DC_VA_Educators) - Teachers, Family and Homeschooling Activities. Approximately 50% of the group current serves our country in uniform. Miliary members are welcome to join.

    To Subscribe, visit Maryland/DC/Virginia Educators.

McLean Homeschool Group - Fairfax county - Although the McLean Homeschool Group began many years ago as an informal co-op with several families from McLean Bible Church, we have moved away from a co-op system and now utilize the talents of a professional teaching staff. Our mission is to provide support services to homeschooling families who are interested in educating their children in rigorous academic studies. While we do not require participating families to be Christians, we operate with the understanding that everything taught in our program is presented from a gospel-based Christian perspective and our teaching staff and Administrative Committee are all committed believers in Christ. Perhaps an obvious but important point to make is that we are not a private school. Additionally, we are independent from McLean Bible Church and receive no monetary support from them. All expenses associated with registration and tuition are covered by collecting fees and working in partnership with the teachers we have hired.

Families that employ hands-on parent participation with their children on a daily basis make the best fit for our group. Our expectation is that parents and students will journey together in the learning experience to ensure the work is being completed properly and honestly. Further, while our teachers issue grades for the classes, it is up to the parents to keep a portfolio of the work, develop a high school transcript, meet the county requirement to undertake standardized testing for their students on a yearly basis, and report the results to the county.

For more information, visit McLean Homeschool Group.
