Dumbing Us Down The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling by John Taylor Gatto
|
In this tenth-anniversary edition, Gatto updates his theories on how the U.S. educational system cranks out students the way Detroit cranks out Buicks. He contends that students are more programmed to conform to economic and social norms rather than really taught to think.

- Rainbow Rhythm Learning Village (Southeast Valley/Phoenix) (RainbowRhythmLearningVillage) - Rainbow Rhythm Learning Village is a joyfully eclectic community of families committed to creating a meaningful living and learning adventure for our children. Many of our families are inspired by our soulful journey focusing on our connections to each other and to universal consciousness. We believe that our personal spirituality is a unique expression and we can all learn from each other’s experiences. Our Village is open to ALL paths, cherishing our human connections; regardless of familial, spiritual, or cultural beliefs; with love, compassion, authenticity, openness, and respect for each other’s experiences as a guide. This is a unique and sacred space to share our life journeys and nurture life long friendships. We feel we are all connected.
Common interests include: creating choices in learning/education, natural and holistic living, intuitive and attachment parenting, crafting, healing arts, metaphysics/spirituality, permaculture/sustainability, inspiring success…be it athletic, artistic, creative, academic or any other chosen passion.
Our members are empowered to explore their inner-knowing and self-expression, and share their unique gifts within our village. We encourage our children to be themselves, to honor their own inner voice, intuition and calling. We embrace gratitude, harmony and inspired action. We seek to know and support our local/global community and welcome service learning opportunities that foster a sense of interconnectedness with the world around us.
We gather in the SE Valley. We offer weekly Park days, Geography and Science Co-ops, Field trips, Full Moon Gatherings, Permaculture/Gardening Club, Geo-caching Club, Mom/Parent’s Night Out, Teen Activities, Seasonal Clothing Swaps, family/holiday/ seasonal celebrations and community service/outreach; and whatever shakes your groove!

It is understood that each family is at a different point in their journey. What we all share is a commitment to unschooling--to eliminate required subjects, assignments, and tests, and replace those with a stimulating, enriched environment and lots of parental support for kids in pursuing their interests and passions.
This group is primarily social, not a discussion or resource list. We aim for weekly gatherings and activities. On-list and in-person discussions about the joys and challenges of unschooling are welcome, as is information about interesting events. Debates about the merits of unschooling (or curricula) and hard-hitting discussions about what is and what is not unschooling are best left to other lists.
This group is neither a subgroup of nor intended to compete with any other group. Unschoolers in the Tucson area may also want to join Sonoran Desert Homeschoolers (SDH) for the opportunities a larger group can offer.
